Italian alternative aquaculture feed ingredient producer Ittinsect has rebranded as Ocean Twist Biotechnology to reflect its widened raw material plans.
"The company now produces high-performance protein concentrates through advanced biotech processes, sourcing circular materials such as plant-based presscakes and insects," it said.
Ocean Twist aims to introduce its protein concentrates as a "novel macro-ingredient" that can replace traditional, resource-intensive ingredients like fishmeal and soy in animal and aquaculture feed.
"We identified a large gap in the market: fishmeal demand is rising very fast, but its availability is limited. Most novel proteins have technical limits that prevent large-scale inclusion in livestock and fish feed, meaning they can't fully replace fishmeal," said Alessandro Romano, CEO of Ocean Twist.
The company is led by a team of nine experts in food technology, fish nutrition, biotechnology, business, and finance. Over the past three years, the team has delivered "outstanding technical results," has a presence in three European countries, and is poised to drive innovation in the protein industry, it claimed.
In March 2024, it unveiled ambitious growth plans, including a pilot facility in conjunction with the Italian government-backed agricultural research center Crea capable of producing 2,500 metric tons of the firm's insect-based protein brand "Beyond Fishmeal."
