Look's Gourmet, a seafood canning operation in the US state of Maine, owned by Sea Watch International, a major US clam supplier based out of Maryland, is closing its doors after being in operation for more than 100 years, according to a local Fox outlet in Bangor, Maine.
Mike Sansing, general manager for the Whiting, Maine, facility, told the news site that the decision was made after "careful consideration and extensive evaluation" of current business needs. The operations in Maine will be moved to a Sea Watch facility in Milford, Delaware, which Sansing said is "part of a restructuring to ensure the long-term success of the company."
Retail producer Bar Harbor Foods has been in operation since 1917, specializing in selling canned clam chowder and clam juice. The brand also includes tinned mackerel and herring, as well as canned Alaska salmon products, among other items. The Bar Harbor Foods line is sold in grocery chains across the country, including Walmart and Whole Foods, according to Bangor Daily News.
The business was bought in 2003 by specialty food brand strategist Mike Cote and then acquired in 2016 by Sea Watch, the largest integrated producer of clam products in the US, as reported by Undercurrent News.
In addition to the Milford plant, Sea Watch currently operates a plant in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Easton, Maryland. The company also has offices in New Church, Virginia.
