Sushi sold at some US Kroger grocery store locations is being voluntarily recalled after being linked to an outbreak investigation of salmonella in cucumbers.
GBC Food Services, doing business as Yummi Sushi, announced this week via the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that it is launching a voluntary recall of multiple sushi products that contain cucumbers.
The Farmers Branch, Texas-based company, is a major sushi supplier to Kroger, which in 2023 claimed to have generated between $400 million and $600m from more than 40m pieces sold annually, as previously reported by Undercurrent News.
The products included in the recall notice were packaged in clear plastic grab-n-go containers at Kroger stores.
The FDA said in late November that it was collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as state and local partners to investigate a multistate outbreak of salmonella typhimurium infections linked to American/slicer cucumbers that were grown by Agrotato, SA de CV in Sonora, Mexico.
As of the time of this publication, the CDC had reported 68 salmonella cases linked to cucumbers, including 18 hospitalizations, within 19 states.
