Healthy Choice, a frozen meal line from Conagra Brands, is looking to profit from the rising popularity of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, which nearly 15 million US adults use for diabetes and/or weight management.
The company, which is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, is set to launch its brand new "On Track" badge on 26 select items to indicate that the products are "high in protein, low calorie, and a good source of fiber." One of those items: A cajun-style chicken and shrimp dish from Healthy Choice's Cafe subbrand.
"These medications suppress appetite, which can lead to reduced nutrient intake," Conagra noted in a press release. "Recognizing this challenge, Conagra Brands leveraged its food-first philosophy to curate Healthy Choice options that are particularly suitable for GLP-1 users."
Health experts have also noted the importance of eating a well-balanced diet while taking the appetite-suppressing medication. The Cleveland Clinic recommends eating lean proteins, like fish -- or in this case, shrimp, the most consumed seafood item in the US.
Conagra said the badge was designed to help consumers "easily identify nutritious and convenient options that suit their dietary needs."
"The increased use of GLP-1 medications presents an exciting opportunity to support Americans managing diabetes and weight loss, as well as those seeking to lead a healthier lifestyle," explained Bob Nolan, vice president of Demand Science at Conagra Brands. "Our 'On Track' badge reflects our commitment to providing accessible, healthy meal options tailored to their needs."
The shrimp dish from Healthy Choice's cafe line is the only seafood item marked as GLP-1 friendly. The "On Track" badge notes that it's high in protein (15g), has 3g of fiber, and is GLP-1 friendly.
Conagra will launch the new "On Track" badge in January 2025. The company said that the shrimp dish will retail for $3.49, which "ensures accessibility for consumers, particularly given the significant costs often associated with GLP-1 medications."
The Healthy Choice product line from Conagra is sold in major retailers across the country, including Walmart, Target, Kroger and Albertsons.
