Vietnam’s seafood exports achieved a record $10 billion in 2024, a 13% increase from the previous year, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) announced during a ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City, Tuoitrenews reported.
The country now aims to hit $11 billion in export sales in 2025.
Key contributors included shrimp at $4 bn -- up 16.7%, pangasius fish at $2 bn -- up 9.6%, and tuna at $1 bn --up 17%. VASEP chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thu Sac attributed the growth to improved product value and sustainable development efforts.
Vietnam's deputy minister of agriculture and rural development Phung Duc Tien highlighted the sector’s role in Vietnam’s agro-forestry and fisheries industry, which reached a record $62bn in 2024. Despite challenges such as political instability, inflation, and natural disasters, the seafood industry demonstrated resilience.
Looking forward, Tien emphasized addressing market barriers, climate change adaptation, and removing the European Commission’s IUU fishing yellow card warning. He also encouraged the exploration of halal and Middle Eastern markets alongside traditional destinations like the US, China, and the EU.
