Ecuador exported 118,000 metric tons (260.1 million pounds) of shrimp in November 2024, 37% more volume than in October 2024 and nearly 21% more year-on-year, based on preliminary data out of Camara Nacional de Acuacultura (CNA), the country's aquaculture trade group.
This highlights the backup of shipments caused by delays that were apparent after the three-day strike along the US East Coast and Gulf Coast in October 2024. Undercurrent News continues to follow the developments as both sides extended the contract through Jan. 15.
The overall value of Ecuador's shrimp exports in November was estimated at $637.7m, up 45% from the value seen in October and 19% above the value seen in November 2023, according to CNA. The resulting average price of $2.45/lb in November represents a roughly 5.5% increase from the average price of $2.32/lb seen the month before.
US wholesale price action
The sharp decline in imports in October led to inventories being pared and firmer US wholesale prices. Overall sentiment remains bullish but the market is neutral to bearish, and there are reports that there is some repricing in Ecuador.
Exports were again led by Industrial Pesquera Santa Priscila, which accounted for 21,710t (47.861m pounds) and $143.3m in value in November. Sociedad Nacional de Galapagos, or Songa, came in second at 15,265t (33.653m lbs). Expalsa, Camar Expo, and Exportquilsa S.A. rounded out the top five, accounting for 52% of exports.
