The EU will not let other nations attack its sovereign borders, France's foreign minister said on Jan. 8, responding to comments by US president-elect Donald Trump on taking over Greenland, reports Reuters.
Trump declined on Jan. 6 to rule out military or economic action as part of his avowed desire to have the US take control of major seafood supplier Greenland, as well as the Panama Canal.
French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot said he did not believe the US would invade the vast Arctic island that has been part of Denmark for over 600 years.
Trump's comments further outlined an expansionist agenda two weeks before he is sworn into office at the Jan. 20 inauguration, noted Reuters.
Greenland remains a major supplier of coldwater shrimp to markets globally, though its quotas are gradually coming down. It has proposed catching no more than 89,687 metric tons in 2025.
In 2019, Greenland exported 61,857 metric tons of coldwater shrimp worth £294.4 million, according to research by Dwayne Ryan Menezes, the founder and managing director of Polar Research and Policy Initiative, an international think tank dedicated to Arctic and Nordic affairs.
It is home to major seafood suppliers Royal Greenland and Polar Seafood, who very much target a multitude of international markets with shrimp, Greenland halbut, cod and more.
