A UK fishing vessel, Henk Senior, has been accused of a "life-threatening" attack on a French trawler, Rose de Cascia, marking a potential escalation in the ongoing "scallop wars" between the two nations, reports the Daily Mail.
French officials claim the British crew used a grappling hook to sever a cable connecting the French boat to its net, causing significant damage and the loss of the net. Etienne Dachicourt, co-owner of the French vessel, expressed alarm over the risks involved, stating that such actions could have led to the trawler capsizing, endangering six lives.
Xavier Bertrand, head of the Hauts-de-France region, dubbed it an "exceptionally serious incident."
The conflict is part of a broader history of tensions over fishing rights, exacerbated by Brexit. Recent disputes include fishing bans near France and scuffles over scallop harvesting regulations.
