Two men have been detained by the US Coast Guard (USCG) following a commercial fishing vessel boarding near Port Isabel, Texas, on Friday (Feb. 14).
USCG agents from the South Padre Island station boarded the Los Nietos, an 82-foot-long fishing vessel, and identified a crewmember as a "Mexican alien illegally present in the US," per a press release. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the captain of the Los Nietos had an outstanding felony warrant for weapons charges.
"The Coast Guard remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the security of our nation," said Nina Mcdonald, enforcement division chief with the USCG in Sector Corpus Christi.
"The at-sea apprehension of an alien illegally present in the US and a vessel's captain with an active arrest warrant underscores the critical role we play in both immigration enforcement and national security," McDonald added.
The USCG was assisted by the US Border Patrol, which is processing the undocumented crewmember. Members of the South Padre Island Police Department also assisted in the case. The vessel's captain was booked into the South Padre Island Jail.
It's been a busy start to the year for the USCG in Texas. Earlier this month the agency reported detaining 11 Mexican fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico and seized 1,595 pounds of allegedly illegally caught red snapper, as reported by Undercurrent News.
In January, the USCG detained another three Mexican fishermen for illegally fishing in federal waters off the coast of Texas. As much as 200 lbs of red snapper was seized during that USCG investigation.
