The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded its recall for Louisiana oysters following more than 230 confirmed cases of norovirus.
The Lousiana Department of Health (LDH) first issued a recall for all oysters from Harvest Area 3 as more than a dozen people became ill with a "norovirus-like" illness just days before Super Bowl LIX was set to take place in New Orleans, as reported by Undercurrent News.
Besides Louisiana, audiences in the US states of Alabama, Florida, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina and Texas were initially warned of a potential norovirus outbreak. However, on Tuesday (Feb. 18), the FDA expanded the recall to include six additional states: Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
According to an update from the LDH dated Feb. 13, there are now 234 confirmed cases of norovirus. This figure includes two hospitalizations and eight emergency department visits. The update also notes that the figure includes cases from Florida, Mississippi and Alabama. It's unclear if additional cases have been confirmed in the six states just added to the recall update.
LDH also reiterated in its update that Louisiana oysters harvested outside Area 3 are safe for consumption.
