The latest status of the world fisheries for tuna report from the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) revealed an improvement in global tuna stock sustainability.
Of the total commercial tuna catch, 87% comes from stocks at healthy abundance levels, a figure consistent with the November 2024 report's findings.
The report shows that overfished stocks now account for just 2% of the global catch, an eight-percentage-point decrease, while stocks at an intermediate level of abundance represent 10%, an eight-percentage-point increase from November 2024 findings.
The March 2025 report also highlighted that 91% of tuna stocks are not experiencing overfishing, a four-percentage-point improvement since November 2024.
Among stock rating changes, Indian Ocean yellowfin tuna has shown improvement. Its abundance rating has moved from orange to yellow, while its fishing mortality rating has improved from orange to green. Meanwhile, the Pacific Ocean bluefin remains overfished, and the Indian Ocean bigeye is both overfished and subject to overfishing.
