Russia has secured a new four-year fishing agreement with Morocco, replacing the previous deal that expired at the end of 2024, reports Interfax.
The deal will allow Russian fishermen to catch up to 80,000 metric tons of fish in Morocco's exclusive economic zone in 2025, focusing on sardine, sardinella, mackerel, and anchovy.
"We submitted a draft order to the government on the signing of a new agreement with the Moroccan side for four years, with an option for a four-year extension," said Ilya Shestakov, head of Russia's federal fisheries agency, Rosrybolovstvo.
Russia is also exploring broader fishing opportunities in Africa. The "Great African Expedition," launched in August 2024, is surveying fish stocks in 19 African countries with the aim of securing additional fishing rights and larger quotas.
"As a result of the estimate of stocks, we hope that we'll get the right to fish in the zones of other African countries," Shestakov concluded.
