SeaBear Company, based in Anacortes, Washington, is recalling two of its seafood chowders due to potential contamination with clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says grows in low-oxygen conditions.
The two chowders being recalled are SeaBear Smokehouse's Salmon Chowder and Alehouse Clam Chowder, shelf-stable products that are sold in 12-ounce pouches. Per the announcement published by the FDA on Saturday (March 15), the products were distributed in physical retail stores in the US states of Alaska, California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington and also through direct home delivery via SeaBear’s website.
SeaBear issued the recall after a customer alerted them to an issue with a pouch seal. Further investigation into the issue revealed a mechanical issue with equipment, which caused the seals of some pouches to not fully bond and leak.
Clostridium botulinum can be fatal and cause "general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing," the FDA warns.
