Danish aquafeed producer BioMar Group reported an all-time low forage fish dependency ratio of 0.37 in its 2024 sustainability report, citing innovative use of alternative ingredients and fish trimmings.
Trimmings now represent 55% of the company's total marine ingredients, though market volatility could challenge maintaining this ratio, the company said.
BioMar also produced nearly 1 million metric tons of aquafeed containing microalgae last year, about 70% of its total volume.
"Our early investment in innovation and raw material development is paying off," said Carlos Diaz, CEO of BioMar Group.
The company reported a 14.4% reduction in its feed carbon footprint from 2020 levels, progressing toward its goal of a one-third reduction by 2030. BioMar also achieved a 20.6% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 23.6% reduction in Scope 3 emissions.
