Kelp Blue, a seaweed cultivation company with operations in New Zealand, Namibia, and Alaska, has been selected as one of 20 finalists in the $100 million XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition.
The four-year global contest, one of the largest incentive prizes in history, challenges innovators to create solutions that extract carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere or oceans and sequester it sustainably.
Kelp Blue's approach utilizes giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) cultivation to capture carbon while enhancing marine biodiversity and supporting coastal communities.
The company's efforts are being showcased in a new docuseries highlighting finalist innovations ahead of the $50m grand prize announcement scheduled for Earth Day, April 22.
Founded in 2020, Kelp Blue operates kelp farms in Akaroa Bay (New Zealand), Luderitz (Namibia), and Prince of Wales Island (Alaska).
