Pricing for frozen crab species is still being led by demand that outweighs the limited supply from Norway, Undercurrent News found in its benchmark price assessment for week 14 of 2025 (March 31 - April 6).
This is a positive relief for Canadian crab companies, as they were immune from tariffs announced on Wednesday (April 2), while Norway was assessed 15%. That means there will be 0% tariffs on goods that qualify under the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA).
The US imported 10.4 million pounds of crab worth $92.5 million in February 2025, compared to 12.3m lbs the same month last year.
King crabSellers continue to hold the market leverage behind their confidence in buyer demand, which remains strong despite the current prices. Nearly all sizes were fully steady to firm. The large increase last week in the 9-12 count is seemingly slightly stretched for this week and leads to a slight retrace. Norwegian-origin is currently the only available product in the marketplace.
Snow crabThe main Canadian snow crab fisheries continue to experience delays, whether from the disagreement over price setting or icy conditions, which is pushing the start of the season back again. This is leaving Norway snow crab fully steady to firm.
There is some hope that the Newfoundland dock prices are close to being settled.
