Alaskan seafood got a shout-out this week on NBC's Saturday Night Live (SNL), the long-running sketch comedy series that, on average, brings in close to 5 million viewers every week.
SNL star Ego Nwodim joined "Weekend Update" hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che for a segment poking fun at the White House Correspondents' Association's decision to cancel its plan to have comedian Amber Ruffin host its upcoming dinner. Nwodim offered herself up to host the event, which is slated to be held on April 26, insisting that she wouldn't trash talk about politicians but would instead make fun of the actual dinner, as in the physical food being served.
"They talking about serving me some seared Alaskan halibut," Nwodim said in a pretend set as her alter ego, Ms. Eggy. "So, I said, 'Halibut you throw that mess in the trash, sucka.'"
Seared Alaskan halibut is likely an entree option this year, according to Cornucopia Events, a London-based service that sells tickets to high-end celebrity events, including the White House Correspondents' Dinner. The company said, based on previous years, the menu will also likely feature a terrine of jumbo lump crabmeat as an appetizer option. Hopefully none of it ends up in the trash, as "Ms. Eggy" suggests.
The White House Correspondents' Association represents the press and journalists who cover the White House. Every year a dinner is held at the Washington Hilton Hotel to raise money for scholarships. The guest lists often include big celebrity names and is typically attended by the president -- although president Donald Trump never attended any of the four dinners held during his first term in office.
The sketch about the dinner has been viewed over 1 million times on YouTube. The clip has gone viral after the audience collectively and accidentally cursed live on air. You can watch it below.
