An oyster kingdom in New Brunswick, Canada
The throne that rules over all of Canada’s oyster kingdom is in the tiny New Brunswick town of Richibucto Village. That’s where Oyster Kings maintains its new 4,000 square foot office and processing facility, serving as the central hub for nearly 100 acres of oyster farms on the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
Undercurrent News visited the operation and took photographs in October 2023 as part of a field trip offered in conjunction with the Global Seafood Alliance’s Responsible Seafood Summit.
The oyster business was started in 1969 by M. Armand King but bought out by his son, Danny King, in 2015, and expanded. It has grown from seeding one million to 9m oysters per year in 15,000 cages across three bay areas. But the younger King said his plan is to reach 30m/year. He estimated he sells 12-14m pieces annually, adding up to roughly 1.2- to 1.4m pounds.
Helping Oyster Kings to sell more of its oysters is its 15-20 unique product names, including many that might be considered R-rated. They include Sex on the Bay, 69, Honey Moon, G Point and Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Night).
