Aquagrow’s hatchery and floating finfish cage farm in Malaysia
In April 2015, Malaysian finfish company Aquagrow gave Undercurrent News a behind-the-scenes look at its grouper, snapper and barramundi farm in the Langkawi archipelago on the Andaman Sea.
Ten Vietnamese aquaculture experts live and work on the farm, which was started with a $17m loan from Malaysia’s Agrobank.
It has 18 square cages for grouper and snapper and 18 round cages for barramundi and snapper.
The company’s CEO, Mohamed Razali Mohamed, told Undercurrent that out of the 2,500 farmers in the country also farming those three species, Aquagrow is the only one using circular cages such as those used by the salmon industry in Norway.
The company also operates its own hatchery on the main island of Langkawi.
