The companies have decades of history in New Brunswick, Canada, where the academies took place in conjunction with the St. Andrews Seafood Forum. Students received lessons on the species' biology, updates on the stock status as well as tours of the companies' processing operations.
Lobster, although incredibly plentiful the past few years, is expected to become less so in coming years, although just how much supply will drop off is highly debatable. As researchers struggle to determine how to raise lobsters -- which tend towards cannibalism -- they also note all signs point to a healthy stock, Bob Bayer, who gave the talk on lobsters, said.
This is one of many facts presented at the Lobster and Salmon Academies, which took place June 3 -6, 2014, and occurs at least twice a year. The next Salmon Academy and Lobster Academy will be held Sept. 29 through Oct. 2.
"We believe that 50% of the learning is from each other as we have some very experienced in the seafood industry participants," East Coast Seafood CEO Mike Tourkistas told Undercurrent News, noting there are still openings for the next one.
