Recirculation trout farms in Denmark
Thanks to strict laws on water usage and environmental impact, Denmark has become a leader in RAS - recirculation aquaculture system - fish farming.
The two farms below, Kaerhede Dambrug and Aquapri, use RAS technology to produce trout. All RAS involves certain fundamental pieces: a grow-out tank for fish, mechanical filtration to remove waste, biofilters which use bacteria to remove ammonia from the water, and de-gassing / re-oxygenation of the water.
Aquaculture being a relatively young industry, and RAS even more so, innovation and developments happen frequently. Danish farms are among those taking the basic constituents and experimenting with using them in different ways.
In October 2013, Undercurrent was invited by Biomar, which produces a feed especially for RAS called Orbit, to join a delegation of Chileans visiting Denmark for inspiration in recirculation farming.
