Inside a Hema store in Shanghai
Undercurrent News visited two Hema stores in Shanghai in 2019. The retail chain, which was founded by Chinese technology giant Alibaba Group in 2016, is the flag-bearer of China's 'new retail' concept.
The idea is to provide "in-store experiences" to do away with the drudgery of grocery shopping. If shoppers still can't stomach it, if they live within a three-kilometer radius of a store, online orders can be delivered to their homes within 30 minutes.
