Peru makes push for frozen value-added giant squid
Three years ago, Peruvian frozen producer Agropesca del Peru took the strategic decision to focus on giant squid, and now it will focus on frozen value-added products.
"[Value-added] is more profitable than giant squid exports in bulk," Niflin Armilhuay, general manager for frozen products at Agropesca, told Undercurrent News on Aug. 25, 2014, during a plant visit organized by the exporters' association Adex ahead of the annual Expoalimentaria trade show in Lima.
While prices of cooked, frozen giant squid have dived from $2,300 per ton to $1,200/t in recent years, value-added squid such as rings have reached $3,500/t this year, Armilhuay said.
