We are seeking a Director of Freshwater Operations for Kelly Cove Salmon (KCS) to work in our Oak Bay Hatchery.  This division of Cooke Aquaculture is responsible for the freshwater farming of approximately 15 million Atlantic Salmon smolt and employees over 100 employees.

Reporting to the Vice President of Freshwater operations your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to leadership in the following:

  • Provide operational leadership to the freshwater team.
  • Maintain and develop on-going 5 Year operational and CAPEX plans.
  • Lead the coordination and logistics of Smolt transfer.
  • Understanding and execution of Process Improvement initiatives.
  • Forecasting and communicating the needs of the business to the various support and service companies.
  • Knowledgeable in both flow through and recirculating aquaculture systems.
  • Responsible for tracking and reporting on key biological performance indicators.
  • Responsible for all freshwater costs and reporting on key financial performance indicators.
  • Responsible in providing industry leadership and may be required to sit on industry association boards from time to time.
  • In a team environment, must have the ability to understand and interpret complex fish farming business dynamics including government regulation, environmental monitoring, new site development processes, NGO interactions, etc. 
  • Basic understanding and commitment to the requirements of various industry certification schemes (eg BAP).
  • Corporate support and structure provided in the areas of HR, Feed Management, Nutrition, Health and Safety, Fish Health, R&D, maintenance, engineering, Logistics, Communications and Public Relations, Process Improvement, Legal, Accounting and Business management.
  • May be called upon to support global land-based farming operations from time to time. 

To be considered for this role you will bring a minimum of 10 years related experience in aquaculture and a deep knowledge of modern recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). A master’s degree in a related study would be considered an asset.
