We are currently accepting applications for dynamic, high performing team leaders with a proven track record in effectively managing deck crew for First Mate positions on our new state-of-the-art groundfish vessel, Calvert.

The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications:

• Fishing Master’s Class 3 or greater.
• Valid Transport Canada Seafarer’s Marine Medical and Marine Emergency Duties Certificate.
• Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) Certificate.
• Familiar with the handling the vessel (i.e., maneuvering, docking, anchoring, etc.), under the direction of the Captain as well as the operation of critical systems (i.e., electronic navigation aids, steering, de-watering, safety apparatus, etc.).
• Capable of controlling the vessel in the Captain’s absence.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel as well as other computer and data entry software.
• Valid Code of Conduct.

Duties include:

• Manages the deck crew to ensure they follow safe working practices as defined by company policies and procedures.
• Identifies potential ship hazards associated with deck operations and advise the Captain accordingly.
• Monitors communication equipment and keeps logs and records as required by Transport Canada (TC) and Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
• Maintains and routinely inspects all safety and emergency equipment such as life jackets, inflatable life rafts, flares, Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), emergency flashlights, first-aid kits, life raft emergency packs, and hand-held radios, etc.
• Ensures safety equipment is well-organized, operable, available for emergency use and re-stocked as necessary.
• Records safety equipment inspections in appropriate logbooks.
• Coordinates with the Captain the scheduling and execution of routine emergency drills as required by the company and Transport Canada.
• Performs navigational watches as deemed necessary and prudent by the Captain in accordance with normal bridge management procedures.
• Maintains navigational and communication equipment in accordance with national standards, company policy and the Captains standing orders.
• Assists in scheduling safe vessel operation and navigation, hauling and shooting fishing gear and any other actions deemed necessary by the Captain.
• Reports all incidents and accidents by carrying out the appropriate follow-up investigation, recommendations and preventative measures.
• Leads the Occupational Health and Safety Committee (OHS) and ensures all OHS requirements are met on a trip-by-trip basis.
• Ensures orientations and job cards are completed for all new crew.
• Completes the vessel inspection checklist.
• Conducts administrative duties including, vessel chart inventory, creating and maintaining training schedules, vessel certifications and employee certification logs.
• Ensures all fishing gear is ordered, received, accounted for and is properly stored.
• Promotes a safe courteous atmosphere and strives to make improvements in a professional manner.
• Work a trip on/trip off rotation, as well as working in port with members of the opposite rotation.
