Job description

We have a rare opportunity for a highly skilled Hatchery Manager to help deliver our plans for growth.

With 58 marine farms around Scotland’s west coast and Northern Isles, Scottish Sea Farms supplies premium quality salmon to customers in over 24 countries.

On course to deliver 40kt+ in 2022, our ambition is to be producing 50kt by 2025. Achieving it will involve steadily increasing volumes at each of our three freshwater facilities, including our Girlsta Hatchery on Shetland – a key farming region for the company.

About us
Now the second largest producer of Scottish farmed salmon by forecast annual harvest volumes, Scottish Sea Farms has been co-owned for over 20 years by Lerøy Seafood Group and SalMar ASA – both of whom are listed on the Oslo stock exchange – and has an annual turnover of £139M (2020).

About the role
We're looking for a stand-out candidate capable of overseeing all freshwater farming activities at our Girlsta Hatchery: from strategic and operational planning to people development and succession planning. Strong working relationships with marine colleagues will be every bit as important, helping ensure the smoothest transition for our fish and maximising survival at sea.

About you
First and foremost, you'll understand the importance of giving our fish the best start and bring a proven track record of pairing intuition with innovation to deliver high quality, highly conditioned fish. You’ll be equally adept at getting the very best out of your team, nurturing and developing individuals according to their natural attributes and skill-sets.

Ideally, you’ll have some understanding of recirculating aquaculture systems and rearing fish in a controlled environment: biofilter processes, maturation, water chemistry, the lot.

About Shetland
Consisting of over 100 islands, 15 of which are inhabited, Shetland offers the best of both worlds. On the one hand, it has UNESCO Global Geopark status for its internationally important geology and landscapes, ensuring that the views to and from work are as unspoilt as they are stunning. On the other, it has high employment, plentiful amenities, regular flights and ferries per day, and over 20 schools for those with families.

Our Girlsta Hatchery is located on the Mainland – the main island of Shetland – and as such is only a short drive from shops, bars, restaurants, hotels and other essential services.

Competitive package
As Hatchery Manager at Girlsta you'll have a key role to play in the performance of our Shetland region and wider company, and will be offered a package reflective of this: competitive salary based on experience, personal pension, private healthcare and bonus scheme included.

For those relocating, we can also help towards the cost of the move. What's most important is that we get the right candidate, skill-set and enthusiasm for the role.
