GreenWave’s kelp seed domestication program launched in 2022 with the goals of building a seed bank, bulking the biomass of the gametophyte culture collection, and developing a low cost modular production system that can efficiently rear seed from gametophyte material. The Program Manager’s work will range from establishing and maintaining cultures to working with global partners to advance the program.
The Program Manager will build a national cohort of kelp hatchery managers and technicians to identify shared challenges, disseminate best practices, and develop resources for GreenWave’s Regenerative Ocean Farming hub. They will also deliver high-touch on the ground support for early-stage projects and advising for early-stage hatcheries in new geographies.
The Program Manager will also provide analysis and guidance to program staff operating the Kelp Climate Fund, evaluating the ecosystem impacts of kelp cultivation and the methodology for measuring those impacts.
This is a full-time in-person position based in our New Haven, CT office. This position will require some travel, providing in-person support to partners and representing GreenWave at conferences and other industry events.
Areas of Responsibility
Kelp Seed Operations
- Establish, maintain, and advance growth of kelp gametophyte cultures with guidance from third-party advisors
- Monitor and document the health of the gametophyte culture collection, perform induction trials to measure vitality of cultures, and develop projections for seed production based on biomass and culture condition
- Ensure smooth operation of the gametophyte laboratory, ordering necessary supplies, identifying needed equipment, and maintaining a clean and orderly workspace
- Coordinate monitoring, collection, and spore extraction of wild sorus material for spore seed and gametophyte production
- Design and implement environmental condition monitoring for seed operations
Training and Support
- Document production for process management and Ocean Farming Hub content; generate training content in collaboration with the Director of Training & Support
- Build relationships with other kelp seed producers, building a community of practice that captures and disseminates best practices
- Travel to provide hands-on instruction for emerging operations
Kelp Climate Fund
- Support the farmer training team in the development and evaluation of the My Kelp app
- Interpret and prepare presentations of data generated through the My Kelp app
- Provide support to KCF participants with regard to accurate data collection
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology or related field
- 2+ years of employment experience working in a laboratory setting working on marine or terrestrial topics
- Strong attention to detail and ability to perform repetitive tasks
- Familiarity with interpreting scientific literature to a variety of audiences
- Excellent record keeping and data management skills
- Capacity for synthesizing and communicating best practices for external stakeholders
What We Offer
- Annual salary $75,000–$85,000 depending on experience
